The Swan Valley is Perth's most accessible escape — just 30 minutes northeast of the CBD and packed with things to see, taste, and do. Whether you're planning a family outing, a group winery trip, or a long overdue day away from the city, the Valley consistently delivers.
What makes it special isn't one single attraction — it's the density. In a short stretch of road you'll find world-class wineries, chocolate factories, a craft brewery, a honey house, farm-gate cheese, wildlife parks, and paddleboat hire. Most families and groups don't come close to doing it all in a day.
Why the Swan Valley Works for Groups
Most of the Swan Valley's attractions are spread along West Swan Road and the Great Northern Highway — a roughly 20km loop. The layout means you can stop, taste, explore, and move on without anyone needing to backtrack. For a group of 6–8, that's exactly what you want.
The challenge for groups is always transport. If everyone drives separately, someone has to stay sober on every stop. If you get a taxi or rideshare, you're looking at multiple vehicles and unpredictable waits. The cleanest solution — particularly for winery days — is a single people mover where one designated driver handles everything and the group travels together all day.
Pro tip: Book your people mover well in advance for Friday and Saturday visits — Swan Valley is a popular weekend destination and vans fill up fast, especially over summer and during school holidays.
Top Stops for Families
🐊 Caversham Wildlife Park
Start here if you have kids. Caversham is one of WA's best wildlife experiences — you can hand-feed kangaroos, hold koalas, meet wombats, and see over 200 native Australian species. It's genuinely brilliant for all ages and usually takes 2–3 hours. Book tickets online in advance during school holidays.
🍷 Sandalford Wines
One of the oldest and largest wineries in the Swan Valley, Sandalford is set on stunning grounds with cellar door tastings, a restaurant, and beautiful gardens for kids to run around in. The cellar door is relaxed and welcoming — no pretension here. Try the Verdelho and the Shiraz.
🍫 Margaret River Chocolate Company
Free entry, free chocolate samples, and a café that does proper food. The kids will want to live here. Pick up some truffles, rocky road, or a block of their flavoured chocolate. It's a natural mid-morning stop between Caversham and the winery stretch.
🍺 Mash Brewing
If your group includes beer drinkers, Mash Brewing is a must. Big open venue, excellent pizzas, a solid range of craft beers, and a relaxed atmosphere. Great for lunch — particularly on a sunny day when the outdoor area opens up.
🧀 The Cheese Barrel
A Swan Valley institution. Pick up locally made cheeses, smallgoods, olives, and produce to assemble a proper picnic. If you're eating outdoors somewhere along the way, this is where you shop first.
🍯 Mondo Nougat & The Honey House
Two more free-to-browse stops that are popular with families. Mondo does excellent nougat and you can watch it being made. The Honey House has every variety of WA honey you can imagine, plus mead tastings for adults.

Practical Tips
Getting There
From Perth CBD, take the Great Eastern Highway northeast through Midland and follow signs toward the Swan Valley. Most attractions are signed off West Swan Road and Great Northern Highway. The drive is straightforward — no highways or complex navigation required.
Parking
All major attractions have free, ample parking. For a people mover or minivan, you'll have no trouble at any stop.
Best Day to Visit
Weekdays are noticeably quieter, particularly at Caversham. If you're going on a weekend, arrive early — Caversham gets busy by 10am and the winery restaurants fill up for lunch. Saturdays in summer can be very crowded.
What to Bring
- Sunscreen and hats — particularly for Caversham, which has open outdoor areas
- Cash or card — most venues accept both
- A cooler bag if you're buying cheese, chocolate, or wine to take home
- Comfortable walking shoes — you'll cover more ground than you expect
Getting the Group There Comfortably
For families and groups of 5 or more, a self-drive people mover is by far the most practical option. Everyone travels together, there's no convoy stress, no one has to navigate separately, and if your group is doing wine tastings, only the driver needs to stay sober while everyone else enjoys the day.
Our Hyundai iMax seats 8 passengers comfortably with room for luggage, coolers, and the inevitable haul of wine and chocolate you'll bring back. It's the vehicle Perth families use for exactly this kind of day — and it picks up and drops off on your schedule, not a tour company's.
